Sue Langworthy Johnston passed away at home in Vancouver, WA on Saturday, August 26th, 2017. Born in Portland, OR on April 7th, 1946, Sue was adopted 3 days later by Keith & Elaine Langworthy of Bend, OR. Keith & Elaine were full of love & excitement as their new red-headed baby girl made them a family of 3. Sue spent her entire childhood growing up in Bend, graduating from Bend Senior High School in 1964. After high school, Sue attended Central Oregon College for one year before marrying Delvan Johnston on August 20th, 1965. After their wedding, Sue & Delvan immediately made the move to Portland, OR for Delvan’s job. In January of 1966, their daughter Cassandra was born. They welcomed daughter Tracey in 1970.

Sue started working in the banking industry in the mid-60’s. Throughout her career, she worked for US Bank, West One Bank, & Sterling Savings Bank before retiring from West Coast Bank in 2003. During her years in banking, Sue was a member of Financial Women International (FWI). After her retirement from banking, Sue joined husband Delvan working in his freight agency for a national trucking company before her 2nd retirement in 2008.

Sue believed very strongly in giving back to her community. She was a member of the Vancouver Sunrise Rotary Club having served as Chapter President. She served on the Clark County Sheriff’s Advisory Board & volunteered as a dog walker with the Southwest Washington Humane Society. Sue was also a Past Honored Queen of the International Order of Job’s Daughters, Bethel #11 in Bend, OR & served as Bethel Guardian of Bethel #38 in Vancouver, WA in 1986-1987.

A role that she loved & treasured dearly was that of grandmother to her grandsons Trevor & Jared Powell. From the time they were born, Grandma Sue & her grandsons had numerous adventures together. They had annual trips to the Clark County Fair and a special day set aside for baking goodies at Christmastime. She would take them swimming at the athletic club & there was always the trip to the shopping mall for their back-to-school outfit at the end of each summer. Grandma Sue never missed a soccer or baseball game and attended every school function that she could. A prouder, more loving grandma doesn’t exist.

Sue loved to read & spend time with family & friends. She enjoyed traveling & was always up for a road trip around the Pacific Northwest. Sue loved the Green Bay Packers AND the Seattle Seahawks, proving that it is possible to root for both teams. She also loved attending Seattle Mariners baseball games, her last one just two weeks prior to her passing. Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and was very proud to be cancer-free for almost 9 years. Delvan & Sue were active members of the PDXCGP GranPrix Car Club in Portland. Sue was also an proud supporter of the Vancouver Lake Crew Club, an organization that she enjoyed with her husband Delvan.

Above all else, though, Sue loved her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Keith (2003) & Elaine Langworthy (1988) as well as her daughter Cassandra (2004). She is survived by her husband Delvan of 52 years, her daughter Tracey Powell of Vancouver, WA, Grandson Trevor Powell of Vancouver & Grandson Jared Powell of Washington D.C., her sister Marcey Balcomb (Gene), Portland, OR, her brother David Langworthy of The Philippines, and numerous nieces, nephews & close personal friends.

A Celebration of Sue’s Life will be held on Sunday, September 10th at 1 o’clock in the afternoon at Club Green Meadows 7703 NE 72nd AVE, Vancouver, WA. 98661. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations of dog & cat food, old blankets & towels as well as disposable cat scratchers & non-stuffed.
