In Maryland and Colorado he taught 5th and 6th grades for ten years and became the Principal of Letford Elementary School in Colorado where he taught. In 1976 he moved his family to Salem, Oregon. While there, he was Principal of Keizer Elementary School, Walker, Judson and Crossler Middle Schools. When Crossler Middle School opened in 1995, Robert became the first Principal and retired from there in 1998.

Robert loved being outdoors in nature. He particularly loved fishing and could be found at any one of his favorite fishing holes whenever possible. He enjoyed gardening and took great pride in his roses and growing BIG tomatoes!! In his spare time he enjoyed reading historical biographies and mysteries as well as playing games with family and friends. Supporting his children Karl and Jennifer, in the activities they were passionate about, was important to him. Watching them excel gave him great pleasure.

The family is planning a private remembrance and celebration of his life at a later time.
