Reginald Charles Scales III

November 29, 1980 – September 18, 2020

Reginald Charles Scales III, was born November 29, 1980 to Patricia Ann Powell-Scales and Reginald Charles Scales, Jr., of Los Angeles, California. Affectionately called Reggie and Junior by his family. Reggie was the fifth of six children. Reggie was 39 years old when he was called home to be with the Lord.

Reggie was born in Compton, California and was raised in Long Beach, California where as a young boy he attended Burnett Elementary, Jefferson Jr. High, and completed his high school education at  Woodrow Wilson High School.

Growing up he loved music and had a knack for dancing, his friends loved to see him dance. He was well known and loved by every soul that knew him. He was known for his compassion for others and their needs. He enjoyed all sports, but his heart was in basketball. His favorite and #1 team has always been the Los Angeles Lakers. That was his world! Reggie was the adventure type of guy. He loved to spark great adventures among family and friends. He enjoyed his life to the fullest. He loved taking beautiful trips with his wife and daughters. It brought him great joy.

In January 2002, he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Yunika Sowell. He welcomed into his life her daughter Dajanique and cared for her as his own. Later to this union came their daughter Dana Kyla Irie Scales. The family enjoyed their life together in Portland, Oregon where they were married and lived for 18 years. He was loved and cared for by his family there.

Reggie was a loving husband. A very devoted father, son, brother, nephew, grandson, uncle, cousin, and a genuine friend. He was known to everyone for his “sporty sneakers” and “kicks”, and was always so well dressed and groomed. We will truly miss the unique greatness about him. His bravery was untouchable. A pillar of strength is what he was. He loved and was very close to his brothers and his one and only sister. He loved his nieces and nephews. Family was his everything.

On Friday, September 18, 2020, Reginald Charles Scales III, was called home to be present with the Lord. He was preceded in death my his parents Patricia Ann Powell and his father Reginald Charles Scales, Jr., His grandmother Johnnie Mae Powell, and his uncle George Powell, Sr.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife, Yunika Sowell-Scales, his daughters Dana Kyla Irie Scales and Dajanique Channelle Barber. Four brothers, Raymond Norris, Anthony Norris, Sr., Willie (Wyconda) Norris, Jr., and Cori Scales (Markalia). One sister, Quiana (Dashon Sr.) Abraham. His loving mother in law, Linda (Marty) Gillette, Three Sisters in Law, Sovallia Vines, Kea Walls, and Nadia Williams. His devoted Grandfather Louis C. Powell, Sr., One Uncle Louis C. Powell, Jr., Two Aunts Gloria Powell, and Darlene (Boise) Powell-Holland. Twenty-Three nieces and nephews, Six great nieces and nephews, Five step nieces and nephews. A host of family, cousins, and friends.

Reggie comes from the extraordinary lineage of The Langston, Dees, Jones, Sims, Powell, and Hall families.
