February 12, 1925 - September 1, 2016 Share your Memorial with Family & Friends A sister, Mary Chandler, and a brother, John McCormack, predeceased her. Phyllis attended and graduated from Oregon State College, where she met Jack. They married on August 17, 1947. After a brief sojourn to Greenville, South Carolina, they lived and raised their family in Portland. A Home Economics major in college, Phyllis was a consummate cook and hostess. She also had excellent secretarial skills, which she put to use for many years in various positions, including church secretary for Evangel Baptist. She and Jack were members of Evangel until they moved to Gresham and joined Wood Village Baptist. For the last few years, they attended Glisan Street Baptist, and finally, the Chapel at Cherrywood Village where they lived. Phyllis is remembered for touching many people’s lives through her faith, her Sunday school teaching, and later as a Bible study leader. When her children were old enough to take care of themselves, she decided to go back to school in order to obtain her teaching certificate, and started teaching 6th grade language arts at Atkinson Elementary School in Portland in 1961. She also taught at Glencoe elementary, received a Master’s degree in 1972, then moved to Mt. Tabor Middle School and taught there until she retired in 1981. Once she retired, she renewed her interest in and talent for art, taking up watercolor painting. She worked on over 100 paintings: many of her grandchildren; many of scenes she photographed from places in Oregon she loved; many still lifes; and some commissioned paintings. She and Jack moved to a small farm in Gresham and tended a large vegetable garden, took care of the neighbor’s chickens, and entertained their growing number of grandchildren. Phyllis was a loving mother and grandmother, devoted wife, and precious friend to many. She was a gifted teacher, talented painter, gracious hostess, avid OSU Beavers and Portland Trailblazer fan, and dedicated Christian. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 at CherryWood Village Chapel, 1417 SE 107th Avenue, Portland, OR 97216. Reception following.
