Phyllis Ann Caputo Martin

March 11, 1937- March 3, 2020

Phyllis Ann Caputo Martin of Hillsboro, Oregon passed away peacefully of natural causes at the age of 82 on March 3, 2020. Phyllis was born on March 11, 1937 in Portland, Oregon, daughter of Frank and Ernestine (Abranz) Caputo.

Phyllis graduated from Franklin High School where she was active in theater and lettered in swimming. She attended the University of Oregon, completing her teaching degree at Portland State University. She then went on to teach elementary school in Banks, Oregon until her retirement. During the summers while she was a student at U of O she worked as a “Cloud Girl” in the Oregon state forest fire lookouts.

Phyllis enjoyed travelling, particularly to her ancestral homeland of Italy. She also enjoyed bird watching and reading. She was a formidable opponent playing word games with her friends and was an advocate for the proper use of grammar. She was an active volunteer with many local organizations and was interested in local history. Phyllis was especially fond of spending time in her back garden enjoying tea with friends, her bird feeders, view of Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve, and her cats.

As a revered member of the Arbor Roses community she kept watch on the neighborhood from her front room command center and became an honorary Grandma to the neighborhood children and pets. She really appreciated the caring support and assistance from her neighbors who were always ready to lend a hand.

Phyllis is survived by her brother Frank Caputo (Donna), daughters Julianne Yeaman and Janice Thomas (Donn), grandchildren Christopher Brown (Stephanie), Megan Coy (Sam), Mason Yeaman (Melissa), and Daniel Yeaman. Great Grandchildren Lyra Brown, Ada Coy, Visenya Yeaman and Zoey Coy. Preceded in death by husband George Martin and Great Granddaughter Victoria Yeaman.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Special thank you to Omega Funeral & Cremation Service for your caring and compassion. Remembrances can be made through donations to your local humane society or charity of your choice.
