Pauline “Paula” Marie Hartmeier

Paula Marie Hartmeier was born December 30, 1931 in Chicago, IL to John and Marie Marsala.

She died peacefully in her sleep the morning of May 27, 2019 at Regency Park Assisted Living.

She was married to Mel for 57 years prior to his passing in 2014.  They had five children – Adrienne, Mark, Mike, David (Tina) and Steve (Shelly).  Paula is survived by her children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Paula worked at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, OR for over 25 years.  She began her time at St. V’s in the admitting department and later got her medical records degree and was a Cancer Clinical Trials Data Manager.  She retired in 2007.  She had an aptitude for detail and was very dedicated to her job.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother!  You could always count on her to lend an ear if you needed to talk.  She was so dedicated to her children that she worked graveyard for many years in order to be home when the kids left for school.

Paula was never happy about not having attended college.  She had a lifelong dedication to education taking many night courses at community college. At some point she decided to pursue a degree and completed her Medical Records degree in 1979.

She was known for loving to entertain and had many, many pool parties for the family, friends and neighbors.  Paula taught her children how to greet guests and tend to their needs – and of course there was always the “mandatory name badges”.  She never wanted anyone to feel left out and would gently nudge us to go visit with a guest not in conversation with other guests.

Paula and Mel loved to dance and were members of the Quinary Dance club for many years.  They hosted the annual Quinary barbecue at their Portland home on many occasions.

Mel and Paula attended St. Thomas More Catholic Church for 34 years and were active in the Eucharistic Ministry.  They were also very active with the Sisters of St. Mary serving on boards, fundraising and helping in so many ways.

Paula is survived by four of her siblings – John Marsala, Audrey Perkovich, Barbara Clubine and Helen Burns. Preceding her in death were Mary Marsala Parker, Robert Marsala and James Marsala.
