In loving memory Neal Sommerset July 25, 1945  – March 8, 2019, on his father Earl’s 96th birthday and one day shy of his 51st wedding anniversary, Neal stepped into heaven after a difficult battle from open heart surgery Feb. 3rd. He never gave up the fight. He had such courage.

The first child and only son of Earl and Vivenne Sommerset, Neal was born and lived in the Portland area. He was preceded in death by his mother Vivienne. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann, sons, Scott of Nehalem, and Jason (Jill) of Parkdale, and two grandchildren Colby and Olivia.

He is also survived by his father, Earl, and two sisters, Christie Narvasa Van Leuven and ApriI Sokolowsky, all of Vancouver, WA, and several nieces and nephews.

Neal attended Hosford Grade School and graduated from Benson High School in 1963. He then attended PSU and Northwestern Business School before beginning a successful career in sales. He began at Smith’s Home Furnishings and then relocated to North Pacific Supply Co. for 37 years as Regional District Sales Manager prior to retiring. He so enjoyed the challenge of sales.

Neal enjoyed life and always had a smile for everyone. He loved playing golf with his buddies and driving his hot red corvette with his Corvette Club friends, But he always seemed to drift back to Nehalem Bay, the most beautiful place on earth according to Neal, to crab and fish. Maybe that is why he chose to retire in Nehalem.

We would like to invite family and friends to a Celebration of Life for those living in the Portland area and a memorial for his friends in Nehalem later this spring.

In lieu of flowers consider a donation to Make-A-Wish, a favorite charity of Neal’s and his Corvette Club.
