Margaret Read was born June 20th 1909 to Joseph Lee and Iona Grace Read in Eugene, OR. She joined 2 older brothers and 2 sisters. A third sister was born 2 years later. She passed away June 8th in Portland OR where she had lived the past two years at Assumption Village in St John’s.

She attended grade school and high school in Medford OR graduating in 1926. She attended the University of Oregon and graduated in l 931. While a student she supported herself on jobs that paid $0.25/hour.  After graduation she worked 3 years as Wayne Morse’s secretary when he was Dean of the U of 0 Law School.

She lived in San Francisco from 1935-37 and walked across the Golden Gate Bridge on opening day. She moved to Grants Pass OR in 1937 and married Bill McCargar in 19381 Sons Barney and Dean were born in Grants Pass. Daughter Linda was born in Salem, OR after WWII.

During her 57 year marriage she lived in Grants Pass, Reedsport, Salem, Roseburg, Drain, Yoncalla and Medford OR where she lived 30 years. In Roseburg she was a founding member of the Garden Club. For 15 years in Drain and Yoncalla she and a friend were intake persons for the Douglas County Well Child Oink once a month. After retirement she and Bill travelled extensively in the US and Canada, Australia and New Zealand until his death in 1996.

For 34 years she spent the winters in Yuma AZ where she enjoyed bicycling until age 851 swim1ning until age 95, walking daily and playing cards 3 times a week until age 100. She made friends wherever she made and was beloved by all of them. Margaret is survived by her son Dean of Portland, OR. Daughter Linda of Juneau, AK, daughters-in-law Billie Rose of Winston OR and Janice of Portland. OR, son-in-law George Partlow of Juneau, AK. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Joe. Jennifer, Shelley. George, and McCarger, Erika, Hilary and Michael Partlow and her 6 great-grandchildren Serena, Laura, Mariah, Isaiah,

Dakota and Avery. Her 7th great grandchild Hanna Margaret will be born in July.
