John McCuller

March 3, 1932 – August 30, 2020

John McCuller passed away peacefully into the hands of the Lord early Sunday, August 30, 2020 at the age of 88 years old.

Known by many, John was affectionately referred to as Farmer John, Brother McCuller, Papa, and Daddy and Uncle Johnny, all serving a different role in his life.

Born March 3, 1932 in Linden, Texas to his loving parents Norma and John Ben McCuller. As a boy he quickly learned to take on a lot of responsibility as his father died when John was only 10 years of age. John learned strong work ethic and strength as he stepped up to care for and protect his mother and sisters. His early maturity and responsibility helped shape his prosperous and fulfilling future.

In 1950, John made his way to Portland, Oregon via the U.S. Air Force. Two years later he married the love of his life, Marjorie, a match made in heaven. John and Marjorie became saved through their faith in Jesus Christ our Lord and joined the church.  From there John began to build the McCuller legacy. Over the years he maintained a thriving marriage as John and Marjorie always kept God first and brought seven lovely children into this world.  They also adopted many people in the community who needed a family.  They raised their family on their beloved farm just outside Portland, Oregon. They had a vast garden along with many farm animals including cows, pigs, chickens, and horses.

Alongside being a family man John managed several businesses throughout his lifetime, as he was a successful entrepreneur and restaurateur. John used his culinary skills to own and operate The Dragnet, 24 Flavors Ice Cream, Golden Rule Restaurant, Carnival Food Truck, and the famous Farmer Johns Restaurant, home of the Big Beef and Shrimp Burger. John’s early working career in Portland started at ESCO Foundry and he retired after 30 years of service as a Longshoreman.

Part of his legacy is McCuller Crossing; a housing development named after him due to his long standing in the NE Portland neighborhood. As mentioned in The Skanner, a local newspaper, the property was built on the land where Farmer John’s Restaurant once stood.

John McCuller was a beloved son, husband, father, brother, cousin, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He will always be remembered for his strong faith, quick wit, charm, and love for Soul Food (especially catfish), Chinese Food and Ice Cream.

He is survived by his daughter and four sons. John is preceded in death by his father, mother, sisters, wife, and two sons.

A scripture John kept dear to his heart, Psalms 23. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anoints my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
