Grace Alida Hurl

June 21, 1928 – August 12, 2020

Born in Milwaukie, Wisconsin on June 21, 1928, Grace Alida Hurl (nee Clausing) was a child of the great depression, moving with her family to Portland, Oregon in 1937, when she was 9 years old. She has seen the bad and the good of her age. Through all Grace was faithful and so giving to her George, her family, her friends, and God.

Grace had a true servant’s heart, and she was always available to provide care and assistance in any form to her relatives, friends, neighbors and church family. Not surprising, she received the Citation for Meritorious Service for her volunteer service during WWII. Her family still talks about what a wonderful cook she was.

Grace went to sleep in Portland, and awoke in the presence of Jesus, her Lord, and her husband of 73 years, George, on August 12th. She is survived by her three daughters and their families: Linda and Brent Somner of Happy Valley, OR, Brenda and Daniel Brabon of San Diego, CA, and Georgia and David Loney of Hanover, NH.  Grace loved and appreciated her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren so very much: Desiree and Andy Lindstrom, and their children, Ezra and Levi; Dustin and Katie Somner, and their children, Russ and Abby; and George Brabon. Your presence always brought her so much joy.

The oldest of 7 children, Grace is also survived by her sisters Ruby, Janet, and Karen, and brother Oliver, all of whom she loved and so enjoyed spending time with. She is predeceased by her brothers Gordon and Neil.

Playing skipbo, wi-bowling, and the many fun times with her dear friends and the wonderful staff at Mt Tabor Assisted Living made her last few years joy-filled. You made her smile and laugh so easily. She especially looked forward to her time with her loving and faithful friend of so many years, Joyce. Gilbert, you were like a son to Grace – thank you. Many other close friends made sure she had rides to church and included her in their family gatherings. She loved and served well, and she was well-loved and well-served by many.

We will see you again. We will follow your example. Well done Grace, well done!

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Grace’s memory to Grace Bible Fellowship, 12420 NE Siskiyou, Portland, OR 97230.
