Eleanor Mary Malin

1942 to 2021

Eleanor Mary Malin, author, baker, jewelry maker, mom, wife, sister, grandmother, artist, and entrepreneur died at the age of 79, on February 12th, 2021.

Born in LaCross, Wisconsin, on January 25th, 1942. Daughter of Edward and Irene Malin, Eleanor grew up on a Filbert farm in Aurora, Oregon, with her two younger sisters, Chris and Roz.

Throughout her life, Eleanor loved playing the flute. She would retell a story from her childhood about when as a grade schooler she was often invited to perform at Canby High School. She was thrilled and honored to be playing with the older students.

Starting from a young age her love of reading books took her all over the world, into the lives of fictional characters, through beautiful cities and landscapes, providing glimpses into a broad range of vocations and trades. Eleanor’s vast vocabulary and insatiable curiosity for knowledge made her awesome at trivia and fueled her love for writing poetry.

Eleanor met her first husband while working in the office of a small local newspaper in Portland, Oregon. She was married, at the tender age of 19, to Vinode K. Sawhney. They had two girls, Ruby and Delia, and lived in Beaverton. Eleanor met her second husband while singing in the chorus of a musical in a local performing arts center. She remained married to Dennis E. Hoggatt for over four decades.

During her life, Eleanor enjoyed running a small typesetting business, while spending her spare time making jewelry and baking amazing desserts. She loved to draw and paint and was extremely creative. Eleanor had the heart of an artist, a kind soul, and was beloved by her husband, children, grandchildren, sisters, and family.
