Charles Howard Pierce

November 12, 1926 – April 24, 2020

Portland, OR – A longtime resident of Long Beach, WA, Charles Howard Pierce, died in Portland, OR on April 24, 2020. Charlie was born in Little Falls, NY on November 12, 1926 to Charles F and Pearl Pierce. He had 2 brothers, George and Eugene, and 2 sisters Charlotte and Betty.

Charlie met Betty Buckley at a dance in New York after graduating high school. From that dance on, they were a couple. Charlie and Betty married on November 29, 1947. They moved from New York to Washington in the early 50’s. They were blessed with six children, Gary, David, Tracey, Diane, and twins Jill and Judy.  Charlie and Betty were proud of their long marriage, 72 years! A big party was held to celebrate their 70^th anniversary and most of their family and friends were able to attend.

Charlie worked as a delivery truck driver his whole adult life. He began his career working for a laundry company in Longview, WA and then moved to the peninsula to drive milk trucks.  He also had his own business delivering poultry and eggs on a route from Portland to Ocean Park. That is where he received the nickname “Chicken Charlie”.

After retirement Betty and Charlie made many cross-country car trips to New York, Branson, South Carolina, Las Vegas, Disneyland and Disneyworld. Camping with good friends in yurts was another favorite retirement pleasure.

Charlie was also an avid golfer and you could often find him at Peninsula Golf Course almost every day rain or shine. Even after he couldn’t swing the clubs anymore, you could still find him in the “Cove” having coffee with his buddies.

Charlie loved the beach and everything it had to offer. It was not unusual for him to walk to Beards Hollow and back.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife Betty and his daughter Jill Anderson. Charlie is survived by his sister Betty; children: David (Mary Lynn), Tracey (Rebecca), Diane Yunker & Judy Pierce-Schafer; 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

A special thanks to the excellent Flower House caregivers, nursing staff and all employees at Pacific Gardens Memory Care who treated Charlie with love and respect. Thanks also to the Providence Hospice Team, your support is amazing.
