| A few years ago, while walking in Cook Park with her daughter, Laurie, Barb said she would like to have people love trillium as she did, and not to pick the flowers. Every Spring, she and Don would walk the park looking for the first trillium that announced Spring. In honor of Barb’s memory, Barb’s family connected with Tigard Parks and the Tualatin River Keepers, to put up an interpretive sign with pictures highlighting the trillium and their life cycle. It will encourage people to enjoy them, and leave them for the next person to enjoy. Don tells us that Barb was insistent she did not want a memorial or even a celebration of life, instead saying “People can do good to remember me, support the things I have been passionate about.” Barb would encourage you to support the interpretive sign to carry on her memory, or to donate to your favorite charity or cause in her name. She supported non-profits addressing hunger, homelessness, a woman’s right to choose, and a variety of social justice issues. What we were doing to our environment and global warming troubled her deeply. With her insistence and Don’s efforts, they installed solar panels and bought a hybrid car “to do what we could.”
Part of her ashes will be distributed along the Salmon River, where she loved to hike and celebrated birthdays. The rest will be left at the far end of the Tam MacArthur Rim, above Three Creeks lake in the Cascades, overlooking the Three Sisters mountains. There will also be a short ceremony when the interpretive sign is installed in Cook Park, at some time in the future.
