i was a classmate of vern at the us merchant marine academy and was a room mate at the academy with him during our third year. i also visited him once soon after graduation in portland oregon. i will always remember vern to be very level headed and stable; just the opposite of myself; vern helped me to become a better person and even me out. vern also invited me to move to his area; unfortunately, it was a mistake and my loss. i am involved in doing genealogy work, so if whoever reads this tribute would be so kind as to notify me as to who the mother of each of his two daughter were; and also i don't understand the (danny) johnston and the (colin) warner. if you could shed some light on these items, it would be most appreciated. tom anglin us merchant marine academy class of 1964. please email me at tom44a@gmail.com many thanks in advance.

MaryKay and I are are deeply saddened to hear of Vern's passing. Vern was a great guy and we always enjoyed his company. He demonstrated deep compassion and caring in his career and his life in everything from supporting those under served in the county justice system to caring for pets. He will be missed by all.

Vern was our lawyer a long time ago before becoming a Clark County judge. We were honored to say we knew him personally. Vern was very kind to us - always taking time for our questions and so helpful. He was easy to talk to and enjoyed discussing the finer points of wood-working with my husband. We are sad to hear of his passing - he was a very special human indeed. Rest in peace Vern - our deepest condolences to Mrs. Schreiber and to the family.

I had the privilege of knowing Vernon ever since I passed the Washington State Bar. I practiced before him when he started serving as a Judge Pro Tem in Clark County District Court. Vernon was a joy to be around. He was a gentleman. He was knowledgeable. But most importantly, Vernon was kind and caring. Vernon was later elected to Judge of the Clark County District Court. And it was always such a great feeling when I knew that my cases were assigned to his courtroom. I always knew that he would be fair, and he always was polite and careful to avoid humiliating the participants in his courtroom. You never had to fear Vernon. He was always kind. I am shocked that Vernon is no longer on this earth. I miss him very much, and feel a deep loss. So glad to have known him. I wish his family the best.

Vern was a valued friend of mine for many years. We were law partners early in our legal careers and later, judicial colleagues. As a lawyer, he was a competent advocate for his clients. As a judge, he was firm, but fair, with those who appeared in his court. I am saddened to think Vern will not have the opportunity to enjoy the retirement he worked so long to earn. God bless VLS.
