A World War ll Veteran, born Santa Monica, CA, he moved to Portland, OR in the 1970s. «Bob» was born in the Santa Monica Hospital at 4:17 PM on November 3, 1926. He was the second son and third child born to parents Ann Elizabeth Layton and Harry Joseph McCarthy.

His father, Harry Joseph McCarthy, grew up and was best friends with the famous Film Director and Actor John Huston. They worked together as co-owners of a grocery store. They both dated the same woman, who later became Bob’s mother. As a result, Bob had a half-sister whose father was John Huston. When John Huston passed away, he left a small inheritance for all of Harry Joseph McCarthy’s children. Unfortunately, Bob never received his share of it, as he was out of the country at the time and couldn’t be located.

Bob married Maria Guadalupe «Lupe» Bocanegra on October 31, 1964 and they were married for 28 years before her passing on March 8, 1993. His heart remained true to Lupe until the end of his life.

Bob served with honor in the US Navy from November 9, 1944 – December 5, 1946. He served on the Aircraft carrier «Saidor» in the Pacific Theatre.

Bob had enjoyed playing football as a Quarterback in high school and was later offered a job as Assistant Coach by his former coach to coach professionally. He turned it down. He had given his life to Christ at age 19 and felt lead toward a different, religious path.

Bob devoted his life from that point on, to evangelism and street preaching. At age 20, with only $1.20 in his pocket, Bob went on a faith preaching outreach across the country to New york city and back. Later, playing trumpet and evangelizing, Bob toured southern California up to San Francisco with a blind Christian brother who played the accordion. He would continue evangelization throughout his entire life.

In his sixties, seventies and eighties, for over two decades, six days a week for two to three hours each time, Bob proclaimed the good news of Jesus Christ to the lost in downtown Portland, Oregon. He led many hundreds of people to the Lord in his ministry.

Having a great love for the Mexican people, and being totally fluent in Spanish, he used his own Social Security as funding, to make more than fifty Missionary trips to Mexico over two decades.

Bob served for many years on the Board of Directors of an Evangelical Church in Portland, Oregon.

In 1999, at the age of 72, Bob became one of the earliest proponents of the New Monasticism movement in Evangelical Christianity, as one of four founders, including his daughter Linda, of The Prayer Foundation (http://prayerfoundation.org/index.htm)

Bob was also a founding member of The Prayer Foundation Knights of Prayer, A Protestant Lay Franciscan Order (Celtic Christian), currently with several thousand of members in 44 countries. The Prayer Foundation website contains two articles specifically devoted to «Monk Bob’s» life and ministry:
«Monk Bob: Street Preacher» (http://prayerfoundation.org/monk_bob_street_preacher_1.htm) and «Monk Bob and the Falling Stars» (http://prayerfoundation.org/monk_bob_and_the_falling_stars.htm).

Robert «Bob» McCarthy is survived by his three children, Robert Steven McCarthy (Junior), Linda McCarthy and Candy McCarthy, and two granddaughters, Lupita & Rosa Linda.

Bob is preceded in death by his wife Maria Guadalupe «Lupe» Bocanegra De McCarthy, his parents, Harry Joseph McCarthy and Ann Elizabeth Layton, as well as his brother Harry McCarthy and one sister.

Bob passed away at the age of 88 years old. A Memorial Service will be held on September 15, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Willamette National Cemetery with full military honors.
