Michael “Chappie” Grice

March 4, 1948 – September 13, 2025

Michael “Chappie” Grice, 77, of Portland, Oregon, passed away peacefully at his home on September 13, 2025, surrounded by his family. Born on March 4, 1948, to Leroy “Chappie” Grice and Alene Grice, Michael devoted his life to education, mentorship, and uplifting his community.

He began his career as a teacher at Adams High School, where he met his wife, Gwendolyn.  Together they raised two daughters, Joy Coggins (Theodore) and Toi Menten, and welcomed two grandsons, Cole and Cameron, who brought him great joy.

Michael worked for the Portland Public School District and the San Francisco School District combined for over 50 years as a teacher and as an administrator. Michael co-founded the World Arts Foundation to inspire arts and education.  He spent his life encouraging students to reach their full potential, and to spark their love of learning. He was recognized for his contributions to education, mentorship and the arts, and was known for his positivity, generosity, and ability to see the good in others.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, teacher, mentor, and community leader who touched countless lives.
