Maureen Beth Utz

June 1, 1956 – February 17, 2025

Maureen Beth Utz, age 68, of Lake Oswego, Oregon, passed away on February 17, 2025, after a long struggle with chronic disease.

Maureen was born June 1, 1956 in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of Frederick Raymond Utz Jr. and Madalyn Antonette Utz (nee Turtan).

The Utz family moved to Tigard, Oregon in 1970. Maureen attended Tigard Senior High School, where she excelled in all her academic coursework. As a high school newspaper writer, and eventual editor, Maureen developed a passion for language arts.

Maureen graduated from Tigard High School in 1974, then continued her education at The University of Oregon. Maureen earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism, with a minor in Political Science.

After graduating from college in 1978, Maureen found that career opportunities in journalism, were limited. Maureen pursued a career in the banking industry and worked in finance at Benjiman Franklin Savings and Loan and The Bank of America.

Several years later, Maureen chose to make a career change. Inspired by her parents, both educators, and her passion for language arts, Maureen decided that she would like to teach high school English. She returned to school and attended the University of Portland, where she earned a master’s degree in education.

Maureen obtained a teaching position in the English Department at David Douglas High School in Portland, Oregon. She took great pleasure in working with her young high school students. Ultimately, Maureen became the school Grant Manager, responsible for writing grant applications for funds to enhance the quality of education at David Douglas. She remained at David Douglas until multiple health issues forced her into retirement.

Throughout her life, Maureen was always able to maintain close relationships with family, friends, and co-workers. Many of her close friendships lasted for decades, some going back to childhood. Maureen will be missed by many who had the privilege of knowing her.

Maureen is survived by her brother, Mark Utz, her Sister-In-Law, Gudrun Utz, and three nephews.

A funeral mass will be held for Maureen at The Madeleine Catholic Church, 3123 NE 24th Avenue., Portland, Oregon 97212 on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 11:00 a.m.
