Lawrence Allen Penberthy

June 10, 1941 – March 3, 2022

Lawrence Allen Penberthy was born June 10, 1941, in Minot, North Dakota where he lived with his parents Fredrick Allen, Maxine and his sister Iris. They moved to Oregon in 1953 when his parent’s both got jobs in the Portland Shipyards. As a child Larry was very mischievous, so much so, that he pulled a prank on their building manager that got them kicked out of their apartment.

He attended St. Ignatius and St. Peters Catholic schools and went to Franklin High School in SE Portland. One of his first jobs, along with his sister Iris, was going door-to-door collecting wire hangers returning them to the dry cleaners for a penny-a-piece. Another job he remembered fondly was when he was a paperboy where he sold enough subscriptions to win a trip to San Francisco two years in a row.

He dropped out of High School to join the United States Air Force in 1959 at the age of 17.  Being underage, he had to ask his dad to sign the release form allowing him to legally join. He served at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD where he served in the maintenance squadron, where part of his duties was in-flight refueling.  During his enlistment he was briefly married and had two sons, Lawrence Jr., and William.

When he was Honorably Discharged from the Air Force he settled in Portland, Oregon where he went to work in the truck garage at Safeway Inc.  During this time, at a party he was invited to by his sister Iris, he met his wife Linda.  They were married April 9, 1966, and had two children, Barbara (Barbie) and Robert (Bobby). As he raised his family, he had many jobs.  He worked as a salesman at Don Harris Campers on 82nd Ave.  He took advantage of this job and purchased a Conestoga camper himself where he became the Wagon-Master of the very first Conestoga Pioneers Camper Club that later produced many other Chapters.  Larry and Linda along with Barbie and Bobby went on countless trips around the country in that camper.

Later Larry worked as a pneumatic stapler/nailer representative for Senco and Parr Lumber Company for 15 years.  In 1988 Larry decided to start his own business, Penberthy’s Gourmet Foods. For the next 20 years he and Linda sold their products at food shows, bazaar’s, local Northwest markets and online.  In 2007 he retired from the business and he and Linda became full-time grandparents loving every minute.

Larry was a believer for many years after his sister Iris introduced him to Jesus.  After attending East Hill Church for several years, he and Linda settled at Sunnyside Church in 1984 where Larry made some of his deepest friendships.

Larry passed away on March 3, 2022, at the age of 80. He is survived by his wife Linda Penberthy, daughter Barbara who is married to Paul Johnson, son Bob married to Lisa Penberthy, and his four grandchildren, Dustin and Madilynn Johnson, and Xander and Alaster Penberthy.

A Memorial Service for Larry will be on Saturday, March 12th at 11:00am, Sunnyside Church – 13231 SE Sunnyside Rd, Clackamas, OR 97015,  (503) 698-5555, CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS
