May 24, 1953 - June 10, 2025 Share your Memorial with Family & Friends Born May 24, 1953, in San Diego, California, Anne was raised in Amarillo, Texas, with her siblings William Attebury, Nancy Umphres, Elizabeth Dodgen, and Edward Attebury. As a young girl, Anne enjoyed folk music and playing the guitar, spending time on her family’s ranch and at her local 4-H Division. A gifted student, Anne completed high school ahead of schedule and entered Southern Methodist University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Archeology in 1975. She remained at SMU for doctoral coursework, and conducted significant fieldwork in Jordan and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. Although she left the program “ABD” (“all but dissertation”), she later returned to finish a Master of Arts in Anthropology in 1993. Anne began her professional career as a product support manager at Tektronix, a position that brought her to Portland, Oregon. There she met Edwin Way Thanhouser Sr.; they married in December 1980. Soon after, she left Tectronix and devoted herself full-time to raising their four sons, born between 1982 and 1987. Service to others defined Anne’s life. From 1983 to 1996 she chaired volunteers and served on the board of a local chapter of the American Red Cross. At Oregon Episcopal School she was active in the Parent-Teacher Association, led Junior Great Books sessions, chaired the annual auction, and sat on the Board of Trustees from 1992 to 2000. She also co-founded Gately Academy, now Bridges Middle School, which specializes in providing specialized academic support for students with learning differences. Anne was a lifelong Christian, and a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, and she frequently opened her home in NW Portland, with its meticulously-maintained rose garden, as a venue for barbecues, parties, award banquets, poker tournaments, and even weddings. Anne realized a long-held dream when she retired to Loreto, Mexico, in 2009. However, declining health later prompted her return to Portland to be closer to family and specialized care. Anne’s family offers its deepest gratitude to the staff of Autumn Days Care Home for their compassionate support during Anne’s fourteen-year residency. She will be remembered for her intellectual curiosity, hospitality, and unwavering commitment to family and community. She was preceded in death by her mother Joyce Attebury, father William Hugh Attebury Sr, sister Libby Dodgen, and grandson Otto Thanhouser. Anne is survived by her four sons, Edwin Thanhouser (Molly Lasko), Spencer Thanhouser (Maria Flores), William Thanhouser (Kristine Saryan) and Michael Thanhouser (Shady Cat), as well as five grandchildren: Gertrude Thanhouser, Armen Thanhouser, Rhys Thanhouser, Anne Thanhouser, and Huckleberry Thanhouser.
