Share your Memorial with Family & Friends On the morning of October 3, 2024, surrounded by family, Gary, 66, passed away peacefully at the Portland VA Medical Center in Oregon. Born in Tacoma, Washington, Gary spent his early years in Portland before joining the military and later raising his family in Corona, California. In later years, he returned to the Portland area. At a young age, Gary enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving his country with honor from 1976 to 1978. His time in the armed forces instilled in him values of resilience, integrity, and commitment—qualities he exemplified throughout his life. After his military service, Gary became a dedicated entrepreneur, owning and operating Cris-Swell Inc., a business he nurtured and grew for over twenty years. His strong work ethic and passion not only built a successful venture but also established a legacy of hard work and lasting relationships. Beyond his professional achievements, Gary was a devoted family man who poured his heart and soul into caring for his loved ones. Married for 46 years, his love for his wife, Dena, was evident to all who knew them. He took immense pride in his three daughters—Jennifer, Sarah, and Amy—celebrating each of their accomplishments. As a grandfather and great-grandfather, he cherished these roles, imparting wisdom, humor, and unconditional love to the younger generations. Gary will be remembered for the countless cherished moments shared with friends and family, each memory a testament to the richness of his character. He had a gift for connecting with everyone he met and an appreciation for every song, and a love for fishing and the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Adeline Criswell. He is survived by his wife Dena, daughters Jennifer Hill, Sarah (Jenny) Finocchiaro, and Amy Sybiak, seven grandchildren—William, Anthony, Sebastian, Emma, Baylee, Sophia, and Oscar—and great-grandchildren Mason. He is also survived by his sister Sandra (Vern) Danell and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gary’s light will continue to shine through the lives he has touched, even in his absence. A celebration of his life will be held in Spring 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the VA Portland Health Care System in Gary’s honor. Gary L. Criswell
