EVELYN L. HOGLAND

December 3, 1923 – June 28, 2019

Evelyn L. Hogland, 95 of Oregon City, Oregon, died from old age and late onset dementia on June 28, 2019.

She was born on a homestead in the cold desert of Fort Rock, Oregon on December 3, 1923, to Clarence V. Steigleder and Margaret L. Steigleder.  She joined older sister Betty and was soon followed by brother John, sister Willie and brothers Vern and Paul. Her maternal grandfather later lived with the family. At age 4, Evelyn discovered her grandfather’s body after he had taken his own life. This traumatic event had a huge emotional impact; she started stuttering and didn’t learn to control it for many years.

During “The Great Depression” the family moved 12 times (to wherever there was work for Clarence) from Fort Rock, to Bend, then Oregon City, finally settling in SE Portland, Montavilla neighborhood.  Evelyn attended Washington High School, and wed James “Earl” Hogland in 1943 at age 19. She and Earl built a house in NE Portland, Parkrose neighborhood.  They were married 40 years, until his unexpected death in November 1983.

In 1977, Evelyn returned to school and graduated with an Associate Degree in Architectural Drafting from Mt. Hood Community College. Although she worked various jobs throughout her life, those in the drafting and design field brought her the most satisfaction. She retired in 1988 from Kalberer Hotel & Restaurant Supply Company.

Evelyn was a life-long artist and gardener. A treasured Christmas present when she was a young teen was a watercolor paint set. She later took classes in oil painting, acrylic painting, ceramic sculpture, pottery and drawing. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are the proud owners of many of her created pieces.  As a child, her grandmother “Nana” taught her many things, including how to garden. In 1996, Evelyn combined her love of learning and gardening by becoming an OSU Extension Master Gardener.

Evelyn also had the heart of a servant, and volunteered over the course of her life with various organizations, including, but not limited to elementary school libraries, HOST / Davis Grade School, St. John the Apostle Church and Society of St. Vincent DePaul.

In 1995, Evelyn moved from her home of nearly 50 years to Oregon City, to a daylight basement apartment in her daughter’s home. When her health started to decline in 2012, she moved to an independent living apartment at Meadows Courtyard and then to a private care home, Haven Corner in 2016, where she died.

Evelyn is survived by 5 children:  Connie Brumble (Mike), Great Falls MT; Marianne Kahl (Bob), Oregon City; Alice Larson (Gary), Oregon City; Brian Hogland (Kathy), Damascus and Margaret Moses (Mike), Damascus, as well as 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.  She is also survived by her brother, Vern Steigleder (Springfield) and sister Willie Tykeson (Eugene). She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Betty Dunagan and brothers Paul and John Steigleder.

A Mass will be held Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 10:30am at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 410 Center Street, Oregon City, OR, followed by an internment service at 2:00pm, Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Happy Valley OR. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the St. John’s Conference, Society of St. Vincent DePaul, 417 Washington Street, Oregon City OR 97045

Evelyn’s family wishes to thank the staff at Meadows Courtyard for making her transition to independent living easier; Craig and Debbie DeRusha and the caregivers at Haven Corner for the loving family home they provided Evelyn for the last 3 years, and to the Bristol Hospice team for the humor, grace, care and compassion you gave Evelyn and us in her final months.
