Elizabeth Rose (Chionia) Sabel of Milwaukie, Oregon

In the late afternoon of December 1, 2022, Lizzie passed away surrounded by her family after an illness lasting 15 years.  She was born at home in Milwaukie, OR., on May 14, 1988, the fourth child of Kenneth Joseph Sabel and Carolyn Elizabeth Judy Sabel.

Being the youngest, she was doted on by her older brother, Nick, and sisters, Mariana and Lily.  She was baptized in the Orthodox Church of the Annunciation and her aunt, Susan Judy, became her godmother.

Lizzie attended Holy Family School where she played soccer on the “Super Bees”, a winning team with her good friends, Jenny, Anne and Elizabeth.  She was also in yearly school productions that involved all the students, plus music, dance and art teachers.  Her mother was an art assistant and helped with scenes and costumes.

Her favorite dog growing up was “Scout”! Scout supplied her with puppies for her friends to play with at her birthday party!  From that point on she was a big dog lover.  Later in grammar school Lizzie started Scottish Highland dance with her cousin, Amelia, and won medals in competitions throughout Washington and Oregon.  She also performed the Sword Dance at her aunt, Patty’s, wedding reception receiving a grand applause!

As a teen, Lizzie went with her church youth group to help build simple homes for the disadvantaged in Mexico.  She took the German language in high school and then traveled to Germany on a month-long exchange program. Then an exchange student from Germany spent time in our home as well.

Lizzie attended La Salle High school in Milwaukie, Oregon.  She attended the Father/Daughter dance with her dear dad, Ken.  Her last year of high school was spent at Clackamas Middle School where she graduated in 2006, plus attending Clackamas Community College.  During high school she worked at a senior home helping in the dining room and later at World Market.  Her last job was a barista at New Seasons.  Later, one of her favorite jobs was taking care of her infant nephew, Isaiah!

In 2006, Lizzie met the love of her life, Stephen Bailey, her rock – a love story that would last 16 years!  In 2008 Lizzie was diagnosed with leukemia and started treatment.  She eventually received a stem-cell transplant from a donor, Manfried Marx, in Wuppertal, Germany.  In 2013, Lizzie and her mother, Carolyn, traveled to Germany to meet and thank Manni in person.  They stayed with his family and met their whole, wonderful extended family.  Lizzie lived with the side effects of graft vs. host disease for the remainder of her life with much strength, never complaining – she was truly a silent warrior!

From 2009 until 2022, Lizzie and Stephen worked together, went to Orcas Island on family vacations, shared a home together and cherished their two dogs, Louie & Penny.  Many excursions were also taken with her sisters, Mariana and Lily and mother, Carolyn – always getting together for special occasions and holidays.  Family meant everything to Lizzie with the Sabel and the Bailey family.  Also, yearly family camping weekends at Timothy Lake with family and friends were a great joy to her!

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her grandparents, Earl and Priscilla Judy of Portland, OR., and Ervin and Agnes Sabel of Fond du Lac, WI., and aunt, Susanna Judy Dagler of Days Creek, OR.

Lizzie is survived by her beloved, Stephen Bailey of Milwaukie, OR., her parents, Kenneth and Carolyn Sabel of Portland.  Sisters Mariana (Reuben) Briggs of Portland and Lilian (Nick) Watt of Portland, and her dear brother, Nick, of Portland.  She is also survived by Stephen’s family – father Mark (Phyliss) Bailey of Talent, Or., mother Mary Kay Wagner (Blake) of Spokane, WA., brothers Ryan (Donna) Bailey of Portland, Kevin Bailey of Reno, NV., and sister, Kaitlin (James and Juniper) Sampsel of Port Orford, OR.  Lizzie is also survived by her much loved nephews, Will and Theo Watt and Isaiah Briggs.
