He was 90. Dan was born in Kress, Texas, to Albert S. “Red” Lane and Doris E. (Thompson) Lane. Dan’s parents moved to the Halsey area in 1948, and Dan graduated from Halsey Union High School (now Central Linn). Following graduation, he joined the Marine Corps with high school friend Jimmy Koontz. Dan served on active duty with the Marines in the U.S. Pacific and Asia from 1953 to 1957. Koontz was by Dan’s bedside, comforting him, on the day he passed. Survivors include his second wife, Joann (Rich) Lane of Portland, along with a sister, Alberta Tapp of Portland; two sons, Daniel Jr. of Prineville, and Steven of Tangent; a daughter, Cynthia Fletcher of Houston, Texas; two step-sons, Craig Loughridge of Mulino, and Clark Loughridge of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dan briefly attended Oregon State University before opting for sawmill work in Eugene. In 1970, he landed a job at the American Can Co. paper mill in Halsey, which passed through several successive owners until Dan’s retirement in 1996. During much of his time there, he also was treasurer of the local paper workers union. Dan lived in Salem from his marriage to Joann Rich in May 1975 until after his retirement. The couple belonged to several organizations, including the First United Methodist Church. They moved to La Quinta, Calif., after purchasing a home there in 2001. The couple returned to Oregon in August 2023, when they moved into an assisted living apartment in east Portland. Dan was an avid card player, a sports buff, and a cinema buff. In his retirement he enjoyed working at the annual Indian Wells Open professional tennis tournament near La Quinta. He had many other pastimes including traveling, camping, rug hooking, reading, puzzling, and spending time with his grandchildren. A private interment with family will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland
