A bright light dimmed with the passing of Cheryl Rose Conrow Kluber March 8, 2013. Known for her infectious smile, cheery voice, dancing brown eyes and easy laughter, Cheryl was struck by a devastating stroke March 3. Cheryl was born in Brooklyn on Aug. 3, 1953, to Edmund and Statia Conrow, and at age six she moved with her family to Phoenix. She graduated from Cortez High School in 1971 and earned a degree in Fashion Merchandising from Arizona State University. Cheryl’s high school and college years were filled with music and fun thanks in large part to her close friendship with Janice Buxton, a childhood neighbor whose brother, Glen, played lead guitar for the Alice Cooper band. In 1975, Cheryl left for San Francisco to make her mark, living on the ocean in Pacifica with a close friend from ASU, Margo Johnston. Over the next few years, living in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, she managed some of The City’s top clothing boutiques, operated her own wedding consulting firm and worked at the I. Magnin in Union Square as a sales consultant, garnering yearly awards. Her strong fashion flair was in evidence when she married Bill, her beloved husband of 26 years, on Valentine’s Day, 1987 – the radiant bride wore a white silk gown and veil she had designed and tailored herself. Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the pair relocated to Portland, where Cheryl worked fine retail at Meier & Frank for the next ten years, retiring in 2000 to pursue her own creative interests. During the past few years, Cheryl expertly redecorated the couple’s home and completed OSU’s Master Gardener program; she designed and planted the landscaping for the lawns, in addition designed the backyard patio and walkways. Cheryl was a water exercise enthusiast and avid reader of mysteries, loved Cannon Beach and had recently taken up Facebook, finding many new friends on hummingbird sites. Cheryl had a big heart, always remembered friends’ birthdays and paid particular attention to their growing children. She is predeceased by her parents and two beloved cats, Pip and Alfie. Survivors include her devoted husband, Bill; her beloved kitty, Ellie; and her older brother, Edmund Conrow. A remembrance will be held in July, 2013.
