In loving Memory of Charles Hui

June 08, 1955 – January 15, 2022

Charles was born on June 8, 1955 in Hong Kong. He was a devoted Christian and developed a passion for music. Charles attended and graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with a Bachelor’s degree in music, majoring in pipe organ. During his time as a student, he immersed himself in music activities in the community and served as director of various choirs. After graduation in 1981, Charles devoted himself to music education and setup a stage production company.

Charles met and married Rosaline Cheung in 1982. They immigrated in 1994 and settled in Portland where the loving couple raised their two children, Elirissa and Jason. Charles continued to serve the Lord at the Portland Chinese Christian Alliance Church. He received a Master’s degree in church music from Portland’s Western Seminary in 1996.

In 1997, Charles and Rosaline founded Portland Chinese Times, the first weekly Chinese newspaper in Portland. In 2000, they founded the Hong Kong Club of Oregon to help Hong Kong immigrants assimilate into their new life. Also in 2000, they organized the largest Chinese New Year community celebration. This cultural event was festive and delighted local Chinese and culturally inform to friends who are new to Chinese culture. They established the Portland Art and Cultural Center in 2003. Charles dedicated their collective efforts to bridge local government and the Chinese community. These culturally focused endeavors, brought the Chinese community together and enhanced people’s lives with color and richness.
Charles didn’t spare any effort in passing on his love of music and Chinese culture. He took time out of his busy newspaper day to teach students piano and guitar. Charles also mentored and assisted local cultural artists in setting up their own institutions and empowered them to educate the next generation on Chinese culture. His Chinese cultural programs included learning musical instruments, songs, dance, art, calligraphy and martial arts. His students absolutely adored and loved him.

Charles was a leader and cultural pioneer in Portland’s Chinese community. His sudden departure is a heavy blow to his family, relatives, friends and to the community. His spirit of selfless dedication to the community will last forever. His favorite quote by Tom Lehrer, “Life is like a piano. What you get out of it depends on how you play it.” Charles has played his life as a wonderful and masterful composition.

Charles passed away peacefully on January 15, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his loving wife, Rosaline and children, Elirissa and Jason. Brothers: Stephen (Cynthia Soohoo), Himsey (Rosanna) and Stanley (Margaret) and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 11:00 am at Lincoln Memorial Park (11801 SE Mt Scott Blvd, Portland, OR   97266).
Relatives and friends attending should arrive by 10:45 am at the parking to be a part of the procession to the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, the Hui family has decided to establish the Charles Hui Memorial Scholarship to continue Charles’ wish – to empower future generations to celebrate and honor their cultural identity.  Please make checks payable to PACC (Portland Art and Culture Center).
