Carroll Hutchinson

November 13, 1937September 13, 2024

Carroll Hutchinson passed into the Lord’s arms on September 13th at her home in  Portland, Oregon surrounded by her loved ones.  She was born on November 13, 1937 in Syracuse, NY to George and Mae Metcalf.

Carroll moved frequently as a child as her father’s job as an engineer for General Electric took the family to various places on the East Coast.  She attended Colby College graduating with a degree in Marine Biology.  She married Peter Hutchinson and they moved to Montreal, Quebec for medical school, where son Tom was born.  Marge was then born in Denver, Colorado where Peter was a resident doctor.  The opportunity to work as a doctor for Care Medico took them to Kabul, Afghanistan for 2 years.  The family returned to the states and settled in Portland, Oregon and added their third child Elizabeth in 1974.

In 1981 Carroll decided to go back to school at Portland State University where she obtained her MSW in Social Work while being a single Mom.  She worked at Kaiser Permanente as a social worker for 20 years.

Carroll loved to travel and took her young family to numerous places around the world like India, Pakistan, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia.   She believed that exposure to other cultures was a wonderful thing, and she found a great traveling companion in Barbara Burnham.  Carroll and Barbara continued that trend into retirement. She also travelled with her adult children and grandkids.  They enjoyed intergenerational trips with the grandkids also traveling with groups like Elderhostel and Cross-Cultural Solutions to places like Peru, Costa Rica, Europe, Canada and Norway.

Community service was also a large part of Carroll’s life.   She volunteered at her church, St Aidan’s Episcopal church, co-chaired Catlin Gabel rummage sale, 10000 Villages, Albetina Kerr, the Heifer Society and PACS to name a few.   She always believed in giving back for all the blessings she had in her life. She was a mentor and friend to many.

Carroll was preceded in death by her parents Mae Metcalf and George Metcalf, stepmother Katherine Metcalf and her best friend and companion Barbara Burnham.  She is survived by her three children Tom (Joanna), Marjorie (Julie), Elizabeth (Eric) and brother Tom (Barbara).  Also, grandchildren Jon, Alana, Matt and Scott, great granddaughter Mia and two nephews Chris and Ben Metcalf and families.

The Celebration of Life will take place at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church (17405 NE Glisan St. Portland, OR 97230) at 1:00 on October 12th.  Interment will follow the service at the church Memorial Garden with a reception to follow at the church fellowship hall.

The family would like to thank Kaiser hospice and Carroll’s wonderful caregivers Fatima, Angie and Jennifer for helping with Mom’s care and needs in the past few years.

Please feel free to give a donation to PACS (Portland Adventist Community Services) or St. Aidan’s church in Carroll’s name.  Condolences can be shared at this website.
