AMY JANET MAES

March 4,1936 – January 27, 2025

Amy was the first born to Ray and Violet Rutherford in Seattle, Washington.  Her sister, Karen, was born a few years later.  Tragically, their mother Violet passed away when Amy was just 6 years old.  Ray met Mureen and they were soon married, bringing along a little sister Julie to join the family.  In 1952 her brother John was born.

Like most children, Amy had a great imagination.  She once tried to fly like Mary Poppins by jumping off their roof with an umbrella!  She attended Rockwood Grade School and then Gresham High School, graduating in 1954.  While in high school she played on the women’s basketball team and had several friends.

In 1955, she met Dick Maes, and they soon married on January 3, 1956.  Together, they had 5 children: Tamara, Lori, Craig, Scott and Chris.  Dick and Amy were married for 20 years.  Amy worked part-time for most of her life, including several department stores finishing at Fred Meyer.   Later she went back to work at a liquor store which she truly enjoyed.  She loved going out dancing with her friends Nancy and Julie.   Her tastes in music included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Ray Charles, Tony Bennet, Rod Stewart, and the Bee Gees.

She also liked to travel with her girlfriends Carol, Julie, and Nancy.  She was able to travel to Greece and Turkey and made several trips to Arizona and Mexico as well as Florida and California.  Amy enjoyed working in her yard and cooking where she loved trying out new recipes.  Her favorite treat was ice cream, especially vanilla.

Amy was a very independent, opinionated, and often stubborn person who loved her family deeply.  She was devastated when her best friends passed away.  Amy is survived by her (step) mother, Mureen, sister Karen, brother John (Lindy), four of her children Tamara, Lori (Steve), Scott (Alison), Chris (Richelle), 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her two-day old premature infant son Craig who passed in 1959.

She was loved unconditionally and will be forever missed.

A celebration of her life will be held on April 6, 2025, at 2:00 pm at:
