Alice Lorraine Young was born April 5, 1928 to Elza and Pearl Scrivner of Toppenish, Washington. She married her high school sweetheart Dean Young in 1948. Alice and Dean made their home in Portland, Oregon and had two children together, Beth and Scott, before Dean passed away in 1958. Alice’s parents then moved from Toppenish to Portland to help care for Alice’s children while she returned to school pursuing a degree in education. She eventually received her masters degree and worked as a school psychologist for the Portland School District until her retirement in 1988. Alice was actively involved in the lives of both her adult children and granddaughters Catherine, Kirsten, and Allison, and was a very proud grandma. She was often heard to say that if she could live long enough to see all of her granddaughters graduate from college she would be very happy. Her wish came true, to the day. On Friday December 12, 2014 Alice was in Tacoma, Washington to attend her youngest granddaughter Allison’s pinning ceremony as a graduating nurse. She suffered a massive stroke in the afternoon and passed away peacefully in the hospital a few hours later, surrounded by her entire immediate family.ê Alice had a strong Christian faith and was certain of her future in heaven. When the book, Heaven Is For Real, was published a few years ago she bought copy after copy, giving them away as fast as she replaced them. She’s now experiencing in person what up until now she could only dream about.
