Staff Sergeant George Davies returned to his home town, Portland, Oregon after being missing in action 81 years. Sergeant Davies was killed while participating in Operation TIDAL WAVE, a bombing raid against the oil refineries held by Nazi Germany around Ploiesti, Romania August 1, 1943. One hundred seventy seven planes were sent on this mission, fifty one did not return. He flew 27 missions as an engineer and gunner. His final mission was in a B24 Liberator bomber nicknamed AIRE LOBO. George was 27 years old. George was born July 26,1916 in Winnipeg, Canada to John and Amelia Davies. He had one brother, Alan A. Davies and one sister, Dorothy Davies Wirostek. The family moved to Portland, Oregon when George was 14. He graduated from Gresham High School. Prior to his service he worked for a furniture manufacturing company. The members of George’s family are grateful to the DEFENSE POW/MIA ACCOUNTING AGENCY for their dedication to finding missing military personnel from prior wars. We feel George’s return is an honor and have been moved by the care and concern we have received throughout this journey. Staff Sergeant George Davies will be buried June 24 at 1pm at Willamette National Cemetery with full military honors. His gravesite will be beside his brother Alan A.Davies and sister in law Betty L.
