Aaron Chambers Winegar Jr.

December 19, 1950 - January 2, 2019

Aaron Chambers Winegar, Jr.   12/19/50 – 1/2/19

Aaron passed away peacefully at home on January 2, 2019, surrounded by his loved ones, after a two month battle with cancer.

Aaron was born on December 19, 1950 in Oregon City, Oregon, to Aaron Chambers Winegar and Mildred (Carlsen) Winegar.  Aaron grew up in the Oregon City area and then later in Portland’s East County.  When Aaron was a young boy, Mildred and Aaron Sr. divorced and she married Tom Scanlon, who raised Aaron and treated him as his own son.  He attended Gresham Union High School, graduating in 1969 and was proud to be a Gopher.

In 1970 Aaron married Dianna Salathe and they raised four children – Aaron III, Randy, Melissa and Lacy. After their divorce, Aaron married Cathy Rathman and then along came Bryan.  Aaron loved spending time with his family.  He was most happy when everyone was together celebrating birthdays and holidays, watching sports and barbecuing, especially with Big Guy.

Aaron followed in his father Tom’s footsteps and worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 43 years, retiring in 2010.  What a great party that was!  He kept in touch with former co-workers and is still remembered by some as the best supervisor ever.  They remember that when Aaron called them in to work, he always said “Son, you got your boots on?”

Aaron was an active member of East Portland Moose Lodge, serving as Governor in 2000 and as administrator from September 2013 until his illness forced him to retire in November.  He loved the lodge and all that the Loyal Order of Moose stands for.

Aaron will be missed by all who knew him.  He had a great sense of humor and loved to prank people.  If you knew Aaron then you knew his standard sayings – Let’s Make it Happen, 10-4, I Hear you There, Now You’re Talkin’, the Party’s Over, and many more.

Aaron was preceded in death by his parents Tom and Mildred, his brothers Steven and Michael, and his son Aaron III.  He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Cathy, his children Randy, Melissa, Lacy (Alvin), Bryan, and honorary daughter Krissy, his sister Mary Knowles, his grandchildren Fernando, Maria, Summer, Mario, Scott, Jesse, Lilly, Sam and Khloe, and great-grandchildren Fernando and Leonardo.

Cathy would like to thank the caregivers at Legacy Hospice-Portland for the compassionate care with dignity they gave Aaron as well as 24/7 support for her and the family. She would also like to thank Erin and Kathy at Omega Funeral & Cremation services.  Finally, thank you to all of Aaron’s extended family and friends, including his railroad family and Moose family, who offered unconditional love, support, meals and so much more.

A celebration of Aaron’s life will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 4 pm at the East Portland Moose Lodge, 16411 NE Halsey, Portland, Oregon 97230.  All are welcome. CLICK HERE FOR DIRECTIONS
