February 23, 1932 - June 20, 2019
Allen Farrell of Portland, Oregon
On the afternoon of June 20, 2019 Allen Farrell died in peace and comfort in the loving care of the extended staff at Hillside Care Manor in Portland, OR.
Allen was born on February 23, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York. He served in the US Airforce and was stationed in England. He later worked in the Federal government in the Washington DC area.
Allen met and married Maryrita in Alexandria, VA. They moved to Florida after retirement, living in Melbourne and then Ormond Beach.
Allen and Maryrita moved to Portland, OR in the summer of 2009. Allen enjoyed walking around the Portland downtown urban area, making friends with all the local dogs, eating pizza, riding the streetcar, shopping at Safeway, lunching at P.F. Changs, and visiting the local antique dealers. He often remarked on how fresh the air smelled to him in Portland. After growing up in Brooklyn and spending time in Florida, Allen also looked forward to seeing some Portland snow. He was thrilled to see a beautiful snowstorm fill Tanner Springs park from his window like a snow globe one year, bringing back memories of his youth in New York.
After suffering a stroke in 2011, Allen needed the extra care given by the wonderful staff at Hillside and Providence Elderplace. Regular visits from Maryrita, and watching classic movies with his son Fred at weekly visits helped keep his spirits up. During his time at Hillside, Allen loved special ice cream treats, visits from rabbits, miniature ponies, a special German shepherd, and llamas. Family (Susie, Jaime, Anne, Nancy, Alisa, and David) made special visits from across the country, timing the visits perfectly so that Allen could enjoy their time together. In between visits Allen’s sister Anne supplied him with timely shipments of black-and-white cookies, one of Allen’s favorite treats.
Allen had an eye for art and interior design, and he also enjoyed shopping for antiques and memorabilia connected to his passion for jazz. He enjoyed creating a large audio collection of his favorite jazz musicians. He was a devout fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers and remained so to the end, annoyed about the Dodger’s move to L.A. Allen was also a loyal fan of the New York Mets and his New York Jets. Allen loved animals, including cats in particular, and had many beloved pets during his life. Visits from therapy animals in his later years were a highlight for him.
Allen is survived by his wife, Maryrita, sister Anne, daughter Alisa (and her husband James), niece Nancy (and her husband Louis), niece Susie (and her husband Jaimie), and nephew David (and his wife Gracie), great niece and nephew Tara and Jamie, stepchildren Fred and Maureen, many grandchildren, great nieces and nephews, and great grandson JP.
A memorial service with military honors was held at Willamette National Cemetery on Monday July 1. A second memorial service was held at Hillside Care Manor July 10, 2019.
